The sewage is continuously and uniformly sprayed onto the surface of the filter bed through the water replenishment equipment. Under the action of gravity, the sewage seeps downwards in the form of water droplets or in the form of wavy films. Finally, the sewage reaches the drainage system and flows out of the filter. When sewage flows through the filter bed, a portion of the sewage, pollutants, and bacteria adhere to the surface of the filter bed, and microorganisms multiply in large quantities on the surface of the filter material. Soon, a layer of mucosa filled with microorganisms is formed, called a biofilm. This initial stage is usually called "biofilm formation" and is the maturation stage of the biofilter. When sewage flows through a mature filter bed, organic pollutants in the sewage are adsorbed and degraded by microorganisms heavy on the biofilm, thereby achieving purification.

Biological aerated filter, abbreviated as BAF, is a new sewage treatment technology that has emerged internationally in recent years. It can be widely used in the treatment of organic wastewater such as urban sewage, residential sewage, domestic miscellaneous drainage, food processing wastewater, brewing, etc. It has the functions of removing SS, CODcr, BOD5, nitrification and denitrification, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, and AOX (harmful substances) removal. Its biggest feature is that it integrates biological oxidation and interception of suspended solids, and saves subsequent secondary sedimentation tanks.

 

Aerated biofilter is a common sewage treatment equipment, and different treatment methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. The traditional aerated biofilter process is simple and has low investment costs, but the treatment effect and stability are relatively poor; The fully automatic aerated biofilter is easy to operate and has stable treatment efficiency, but the investment cost is high; The biological contact oxidation method of aerated biofilter has good treatment effect and wide application range, but the equipment is complex and the operating cost is high; MBBR biological aerated filter has good treatment efficiency, low operating cost, and small footprint, but the filter material is prone to blockage; The SBR aerated biofilter has good treatment efficiency, small footprint, and low operating cost, but the equipment is complex and the operation is difficult.
